The Benefits of Cladding Respray for BYD Dealerships

BYD Dealership Cladding Refurbishment Project – RAL 7005 Commercial Respray
At ESS Coatings, we were recently instructed to rectify and complete a commercial cladding refurbishment project at a BYD dealership after issues were identified with a previous coating application.
The project involved diagnosing the coating failure, implementing a remedial coating system and delivering a high-quality finish that met the client's expectations.
Initial Site Assessment
Upon our initial inspection, it became clear that the existing coating system had suffered a widespread solvent reaction. The defect, commonly referred to in the coatings industry as "elephant skin", had resulted in a dull, uneven finish across the cladding surfaces.
Numerous imperfections and reaction marks were present throughout the building, making a full remedial coating process necessary before any finishing coats could be applied.
Surface Preparation
To ensure a successful outcome, all affected cladding panels were mechanically sanded using 120–150 grit abrasives. This process removed unstable surface material, flattened defects and created a suitable key for the new coating system.
Once preparation was complete, all dust and contaminants were removed to provide a clean surface for priming.
Isolator Primer Application
A full masking programme was carried out using automotive-grade protective sheeting and professional masking tapes to protect glazing, signage and surrounding areas.
An anti-reaction isolator primer was then spray applied to all affected surfaces. This specialist coating acts as a barrier between the existing substrate and new coatings, preventing solvent interaction and significantly reducing the risk of future reactions.
During this stage, the first coat of 2K Direct Dry-Fall Industrial Coating was also applied to all low-level window frames.
Three-Coat Topcoat System
Following successful isolation of the existing coatings, all cladding surfaces received three coats of RAL 7005 topcoat in a 10% sheen finish.
The coating system provided excellent coverage throughout, with no evidence of further reactions or coating defects. The finished colour was assessed from multiple viewing distances to ensure consistency and even colour distribution across the entire façade.
All window frames and door surrounds were completed to match, creating a clean and uniform appearance throughout the dealership.
Final Inspection & Handover
Upon completion, all masking materials were removed and the site was thoroughly cleaned.
The building underwent multiple inspections prior to handover, with particular attention paid to colour consistency, coating quality and surface finish. Following these inspections, the project was formally signed off by ESS Coatings with zero visible reactions, defects or imperfections.
